SHOCKING! Female Soldier ‘Beheaded’ By
Boko Haram.
Tributes have continued to
pour in for Oluwatoyin Ogunleye, a female soldier, allegedly ‘beheaded’ by the
Boko Haram terrorist group. Although there are indications that she may have
been killed sometime last year when the terrorist group attacked Baga in Borno
State, there are suspicions that there was an official collusion in attempting
to hide it from the public.
One of her friends, Saleb
Ahabs, posted her photographs on online on Monday asking Nigerians to pray for
the repose of her soul and commended her for the gallant role she played in
Nigeria’s quest to defeat Boko Haram.
Since then, it has been one
of the most topical issues on social media with many commentators reacting and
sharing her photos. Adewale Adeeko confirmed the news, insisting: “The news is
real. I know her well. She joined Nigerian Army in 2013.”
Similarly, a soldier, Sunny
Samuel, recalled the events that led to her death. “It was sad because we
trained together and we were posted to the North East together. The attack that
took her life was a bloody one, which took place at Baga in Borno State.
It was only the grace of God
that made some of us to survive the unfortunate attack. RIP Toyin we will
continue to miss you,” he stated. The last post of Ogunleye who attended the
Tai Solarin College of Education at Ijebu Ode in Ogun State before proceeding
to the Nigerian Army School of Infantry in Jaji, Kaduna State, was on January
1, 2015. She had shared: “Christmas and New Year. Thank you Jesus for giving me
the grace to witness it.”
Another colleague, Ozere O
Godstime, also paid tribute. He wrote: “It was indeed a deadly attack by the
insurgents, Boko Haram. Thank God for the survivors and we will continue to
miss you and everyone who lost their lives on that very day. RIP till we meet
to part no more.” One of her sympathisers, Kelvin Kevwe Ekejija, wondered why
the army allowed women to go to Borno State.
“It is not fair at all. This
beautiful and innocent lady must have been raped and abused by those rebels
before beheading her. So Sad!” Banjul Timi lauded her for the sacrifice to the nation,
saying: “I think it must have happened last year when Boko Haram took over
Baga.”
She added: “It was in the
news that many female soldiers serving in Baga were captured. The army covered
it up, the families and friends are just coming out. She was not the only one.”
Adekanmi July blamed the government for falling to defeat Boko Haram all these
years.
“In fact, I am disappointed
with this Buhari administration. They promised to wipe out Boko Haram in
December but failed to do so. Incompetent government; they promised and failed
us.” Olusegun Akintade observed that Southerners were always victims of Boko
Haram’s attacks.
“Most of the Hausa-Fulani
soldiers are never killed or captured…I have warned the Yoruba to stop joining
the army for now.” Mustagh Alib decided not blame the government for Ogunleye’s
death but Northerners whom he said created Boko Haram. Alib said:
“How can a country of more
than 180 million people be forced to live together? We all agreed to practice
democracy, why do some people still practice Sharia law? Whenever I see
officers beheaded in the course of protecting their country, I feel sad and
tears well in my eyes.”
Bridget Osunruku urged the
government not to give up despite the setback. She said it was very sad that a
soldier was killed in such a manner while protecting her country. “The
government should not give up in the fight to eradicate Boko Haram because of
this.
May God comfort her family,
friends and the entire nation,” she stated. Tout-puissant Obadan noted that
Ogunleye probably joined the army since there was no job in the country.
“Unemployment might be the reason she joined the army, not love for the
profession.
Same thing almost happened
to me. I thought about joining until a senior friend in the system warned me
that fresh recruits from short service are sent to the war zones almost
immediately. That is wrong.”
Babatunde Idrisu said that
from her Facebook wall it seems it happened in early 2015. “You can see
condolence messages in January 2015 so it is not recent. My condolence goes to
the family and friends. These soldiers put everything on the line.
God bless them,” he added.
Oluwatosin Ebenezer Sunmola described the unfortunate incident as sad. He
reacted: “Some stupid people will say this current administration is better.
I remember vividly that they
told us this deadly group will be wiped out by December, but they haven’t done
anything outstanding or special. Deadly attacks every day and we see our young
and vibrant soldiers falling every day. I weep for my country.
RIP to the deceased.” Emeka
Noel Ottey was angry that the military sent a rookie to the war front. He
stated: “How on earth will the military send a rookie to the frontline, a
female? This is callous and gross.”
Though Regina Modupe was
proud of Ogunleye, she wasn’t sure if she would want to sacrifice her life for
Nigeria. She asked: “Is Nigeria worth dying for? May her soul rest in peace.”
Diallo Delavegas believed
she paid the ultimate prize with her life. He mourned: “RIP Soldier. You paid
the ultimate prize in defending your country. Thank you for your great
sacrifice. It wouldn’t be forgotten.”
Maruf Adeniyi wondered about
the pains her family must be going through. “So sad! May God comfort her family
and may her soul continue to rest with the Lord.” For Gabriel Kingsley Panam,
she would meet her reward in heaven. “May your gentle soul rest in the bosom of
the Lord where we will meet to part no more. Adieu.”
Sadiq Dotun Adegbesan urged
everyone to remember all soldiers in their prayers. “As you pray for her also
remember to pray for others who are still alive and fighting for Nigeria’s
peace,” he shared.
Adah Philip Monday said it
was a painful loss but God understood. “What can we say to God than to give Him
thanks and praise because He is the giver and He also takes. May her soul rest
in perfect peace.”
When Anjuma Isah heard about
it, he was shocked and couldn’t believe it. “It is very painful. We love her,
but God Almighty loves her most. May her soul rest in perfect peace.”
Sunny
Eyong tried to picture the pain she might have gone through before she was
beheaded.
He shared: “Imagine the pain
this baby soldier went through before she finally gave up. RIP soldier woman.”
Yakubu Musa Banu believed that her sacrifice wouldn’t be in vain. “RIP Toyin
and my prayers also go to families who have lost their loved ones. We love and
miss you all.”
According to Shola Attah,
she paid a prize others couldn’t pay for the country and she stood gallant till
death Dahunsi Kayode said she should rest well as she had done her part for
Nigeria. “God in His infinity mercy will grant you internal rest.”
Dorcas Dauda believed she
died because of the selfish interest of some top people. “Nigeria is not worth
dying for because when you die they forget about you and the family you leave
behind.
I advise soldiers to run
when the war gets too tough. Remove the uniform and run for your life because
our leaders know the Boko Haram and their sponsors. There is no way enemies
will attack you without an insider.”
Sheriff Mohamed described
her as a good and patriotic soldier who died for her country. When contacted,
the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman said: “I’m not
aware. We do not have such occurence.”
